Isobel Daws Appointed Principal Trombone of Sydney Symphony Orchestra

Isobel Daws

British trombonist Isobel Daws has been appointed Principal Trombone of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, continuing her rapid rise in the classical music world. Isobel began playing cornet at age three under the guidance of her father, David Daws, and the late Maisie Ringham Wiggins MBE, before switching to trombone in 2008.

She trained at The Purcell School, Chetham’s School, and the Royal Academy of Music, graduating in 2022. That same year, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic’s Karajan Academy, studying with Thomas Leyendecker. A BBC Young Musician Brass Finalist in 2014 and 2018—winning the latter—and winner of the BBC Young Brass Award in 2017, Isobel has since performed with world-class ensembles including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, and Munich Philharmonic.

She is a founding member of the trombone quartet Bone-afide and a Getzen Artist. Her appointment in Sydney marks another major step in a remarkable career.
