Hans Jurgen Oortmann Receives Royal Honour

During a special concert by music association Harmonie Caecilia, longtime member and trombonist Hans Jurgen Oortmann was awarded a Royal Decoration for his exceptional dedication to music and community service. The distinction, naming him a Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau, was presented by Deputy Mayor Rob Olde Kalter during a surprise ceremony at the St. Simon and Jude Church in Ootmarsum.
Oortmann, who plays the trombone in Harmonie Caecilia, has been involved with the ensemble for decades. Since rejoining the group in 2002, he has been an active musician, volunteer, and leader. In 2015, he took on the role of chairman, and under his guidance, the association celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023 with a year-long program of concerts and events.
Beyond his musical contributions, Oortmann is deeply engaged in the local community. He serves as a caregiver for elderly neighbours, volunteers with the Protestant Church, and is part of the singing duo Enig en Anders, which performs regularly in care homes and at charity functions. In response to the war in Ukraine, he opened his family home to a mother and daughter fleeing the conflict, assisting them in finding safety and stability in the Netherlands.
“He is a true connector, someone who gives his time, energy, and heart to others,” said Rob Olde Kalter during his speech. “Whether through his music, leadership, or compassion, Hans Jurgen makes a lasting difference.”
The audience responded with a standing ovation, after which the orchestra fittingly played the Dutch national anthem, the Wilhelmus.
The Order of Orange-Nassau is a royal honour awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to Dutch society through volunteerism, cultural work, or public service.
