Arthur Pryor was a celebrated soloist with John Philip Sousa’s band. His recordings as a soloist are some of the earliest known to feature solo trombone. Douglas Yeo, retired bass trombonist with the Boston Symphony, has just published a blog post about a recently discovered trombone recording. The recording, Romance for Trombone with “Military Band, Washington D.C.,” was recorded on May 27, 1897, which is more than a month before Pryor’s first known records.
Mr. Yeo’s research is important as it helps shed light on trombone playing and recording practices from the late nineteenth century.
