For trombonists ages 23 and under (birth date of January 1, 2001 or later)
First Prize – TBA
Tony Baker, University of North Texas College of Music, invites trombonists to join this competition:
Competition Rules
- The Larry Wiehe Tenor Trombone Competition serves to preserve a unique tradition of trombone playing from the United States around the turn of the 20th century. This tradition was made famous by Arthur Pryor, and it has been carried on by later trombonists, such as Larry Wiehe. Applicants are encouraged to research historical recordings by great masters of this style, such as Arthur Pryor, Larry Wiehe, Robert Isele, and Jim Erdman, in preparing audition recordings. Judges are encouraged to give preference to those applicants who present well-executed performances while interpreting the music in an historically informed manner.
- Live piano accompaniment is required.
- Any repeats should be performed as printed.
- The required repertoire should be submitted as a single video file, recorded from a single, uninterrupted camera angle. Accepted file formats include: MP4, MPEG, MPG, MOV, AVI, WMV, M4V, FLV, WEBM, M2V
- No editing of either video or audio is allowed.
- No written signs, name tags or other written material is to be visible in the video.
- Both performers should be clearly visible in the video throughout the performance, with the trombonist as the focal point. In the event both performers do fit in the frame, due to social distancing or use of pre-recorded piano accompaniment, the trombonist must still be completely visible throughout the performance.
- The submitted file must not contain any identifying information. The video file should be named: “WieheEntry.mov” (.mp4, etc.)
- Past winners of the Larry Wiehe Tenor Trombone Competition are not eligible to enter the 2025 Wiehe competition.
