Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize Tenor Trombone Competition
sponsored by Yamaha Canada

For trombonists ages 25 and under (birth date of January 1, 1999 or later)
First Prize – $2,000 Gift Certificate toward the purchase of a professional Yamaha Trombone (restrictions apply)
Competition Rules
- The required repertoire should be submitted as a single audio file, with no editing within the submitted recording. All excerpts must be performed in the order listed. Accepted file formats include: MP3, OGG, M4A, WMA, WAV, AAC, FLAC, AIFF, AIF. Video entries are not accepted for this competition.
- Preliminary round excerpts may be recorded separately, but there may be no editing within an individual excerpt. All excerpts should be recorded at the same location with the same recording setup
- The submitted file must not contain any identifying information. The audio file should be named: “VanHaneyEntry.mp3” (.wav, etc.)
- Past winners of the Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize are not eligible to enter the 2025 Van Haney competition.
Repertoire Requirements
Preliminary Round
- Hector Berlioz (Trombone 2)- The Damnation of Faust, Hungarian, 6 measures before [4] through 2 bars after [5]
- W.A. Mozart (Trombone 2)- Requiem, K. 626, Tuba Mirum, measure 1 to measure 18
- Camille Saint-Saëns (Trombone 1)- Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op 78. – [Q] to [R] AND 12 measures after [R] through 2 measures after [S]
- Richard Wagner (Trombone 1)- Ride of the Valkyries – pickups to [3] to 2 measures before [4] AND pickups to [5] to 3 measures after [6]
Final Round
Excerpts to be chosen from Preliminary Round repertoire, and the following:
- Richard Strauss (Trombone 1) – Also Sprach Zarathustra, 4 measures before [16] to [16] AND 7 measures after [50] through 5 measures after [51]
- Maurice Ravel (Trombone 1) – Bolero – 2 measures after [10] through [11]
- Ferdinand David – Concertino – Movement 1 – beginning through cadenza, with piano

Completed applications must be submitted prior to the deadline and meet ITA membership and other requirements outlined on this page. Application fees (see below) will be charged at the time of application (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Discover, and Diners Club are accepted.)
