Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition (ages 22 and under)

Preliminary Round Repertoire:

  • Six to eight (6-8) choruses of a Blues (including the melody.)
  • Three to four (3-4) choruses of one of the following tunes: “A Beautiful Friendship,” “Emily,” “If I only had a Brain,” “Polka Dots and Moonbeams,” “It Might as Well be Spring,” or “I Thought About You.”

Final Round Repertoire:

  • Blues
  • Medium- or Up-tempo tune from the list above
  • Ballad of the applicant’s choice
JJ Johnson Jazz Trombone Competition (ages 25 and under)

Preliminary and Final Round Repertoire:

  • Six to eight (6-8) choruses of a Blues (including the melody) OR Four to Five (4-5) choruses of a “rhythm changes” tune (examples: “I’ve Got Rhythm,” “Oleo,”or “Anthropology”)
  • Four to six (4–6) choruses of any composition (except a blues) composed by J.J. Johnson (including the melody).
  • Original Composition by the performer
ITA Trombone Quartet Competition

Preliminary Round:
Soichi Kanagaya – Dream, movements 1, 3, and 4 (EMR)

Final Round:
Christopher Sharpe – The Secret City (C. Sharpe Editions)

AND

A piece of Quartet’s choice, not to exceed 5 minutes

Emory Remington (trombone choir, 8 or more players on each piece, choice piece must include all players from assigned piece, but additional personnel can be added)***

Alex Knutrud – Cathedral of Dreams

AND

A piece of ensemble’s choice, not to exceed 10 minutes

Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition (2 or more trombonists)***

Free choice of program, not to exceed 20 minutes
