Arjan Linker Wins Prestigious Buma Classical Award

At just 25 years old, trombonist, composer, and improviser Arjan Linker has received one of the most respected distinctions in Dutch classical music: the Buma Classical Award. Presented during the New Music Conference on November 13, 2025, the award is not decided by a jury but is a populariteitsprijs: it goes to the composer whose works generated the highest amount of distributed authors’ rights. In other words, Linker was among the most frequently performed composers in the Netherlands over the past two years, a clear sign of his rapid rise and growing artistic impact.
A Unique Musical Vision
Linker’s musical path is anything but conventional. After completing bachelor’s degrees in both classical trombone and composition, he went on to finish a master’s in composition in 2024. Along the way, he developed a deep connection to North Indian classical music, studying with renowned teachers and immersing himself in raga traditions. This exploration led him to become the first trombonist ever to give classical Indian recitals, a testament to his willingness to expand the boundaries of his instrument.
His work blends Indian classical elements with Western influences such as impressionism, minimalism, jazz, hip-hop, and metal. The resulting sound world is vibrant, eclectic, and unmistakably his own, a fusion that has captured the attention of audiences, ensembles, and now earned him one of Buma’s highest recognitions.
Why the Award Matters
The Buma Classical Award reflects Linker’s achievements not only as a composer but also as an improviser and arranger. The high frequency with which his music has been performed over the past two years underscores his growing presence in the contemporary landscape, and his collaborations with major ensembles highlight the breadth of his artistic reach.
Adding to his momentum, Linker previously won the GrachtenfestivalPrijs 2025, further signaling his promise as a defining voice of the next generation of classical musicians.
A Bright Future Ahead
By bridging Western and Indian traditions, Linker offers a fresh perspective on what classical music can be. His innovative approach and fearless creativity suggest that this award is only the beginning of a remarkable artistic journey.
