Ball State University Jazz Trombone GA

The Ball State University School of Music has an opening for a Masters, Artist Diploma, or Doctoral Graduate Assistant in the Jazz Concentration starting Fall 2018. This is a half assistantship, which includes a 50% tuition waiver and an annual stipend of the following: Masters: $3,500, Artist Diploma in Jazz: $3,550, Doctorate: $6,000.

While the GA is open to any instrumentalist, special consideration will be given this year to a trombonist. Besides being a strong performer on trombone and possessing the ability to lead the third big band, additional special consideration will be given to a trombonist who also is a competent improviser. Freddie Mendoza is BSU’s professor of Jazz Trombone, and Chris Van Hof is the professor of Trombone. The jazz GA will study jazz privately with Dr. Mendoza in addition to non-jazz lessons with Dr. Van Hof.

The Ball State University jazz program is deep, led by trumpeter Mark Buselli. The big bands tour regularly, including a recent summer 2017 trip to the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Besides local performance opportunities in Muncie, the Indianapolis, Chicago, and Detroit jazz scenes are all easily accessible.
