Job Summary
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Angelo State University seeks to fill the position of Assistant Professor of Music with a specialization in low brass. This full-time, tenure track position requires an engaging individual with a strong commitment to undergraduate music education who will teach applied low brass (trombone, euphonium, and tuba) and courses in the music curriculum that may include Brass Methods and Introduction to Music. This individual must have the ability to recruit, retain, and graduate quality low brass music majors that meet the personnel requirements of the music area which includes, but is not limited to, two concert bands, multiple athletic bands, a full symphony orchestra, and jazz band. Furthermore, this individual will be a strong and positive contributing member of the music faculty that will attract high quality students who present superb musical performances.
Duties
Teach applied lessons in trombone, euphonium, and tuba, a weekly studio class, and chamber ensembles as appropriate. Recruit, retain, and graduate (through academic advising) quality low brass music majors in the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts curriculum. Teach courses in Brass Methods to music education majors, Introduction to Music for non-music majors (in person and/or online), and additional courses based upon experience and the needs of the music area. Participation in university and music area recruiting activities beyond those required for the applied studio is expected. Establish and maintain a successful record of scholarly and creative endeavors, service, and teaching. Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The candidate must demonstrate a high level of performance ability on trombone, euphonium, or tuba. The successful candidate will also demonstrate potential for recruiting, retaining, and graduating a quality studio. The successful candidate must be able to communicate and build a positive rapport with students, faculty, staff, public school teachers, and others in the profession. He or she will possess the ability and initiative to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within the department and university environment.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Music from an accredited institution (doctorate required for tenure-track). Multiple years of experience teaching instrumental music at the secondary and/or collegiate level, including experience teaching applied low brass, brass methods, and directing/coaching chamber ensembles. Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, and graduate quality trombone, euphonium, and tuba students. Experience organizing and hosting recruitment events that will encourage students to visit the ASU campus is desirable.
