Van Hof Accepts Position at Ball State


Chris Van Hof has recently been appointed the new Assistant Professor of Trombone at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He will also be the trombonist in the BSU Faculty Brass Quintet and principal trombonist of the Muncie Symphony. In addition to his studio teaching and performing, Chris will conduct the BSU Trombone Choir and coach chamber music.


Chris previously was Assistant Professor at Colorado State University from 2013-2017, and taught adjunct at University of Wisconsin-Platteville (2012-2013), and Nazareth College (2008-2011). He studied with Mark Hetzler at UW-Madison (DMA), Mark Kellogg at Eastman (MM), and Steve Wolfinbarger at Western Michigan University (BM). Chris is an S.E. Shires Performing Artist.

Yates Joins Faculty at University of Louisiana-Lafayette


Dr. Benjamin Yates has been appointed Assistant Professor of Low Brass at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.


Yates received his MM at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Elliot Chasanov) and his DMA at Iowa (Dave Gier, Jonathan Allan)  while teaching in an adjunct position at his undergraduate alma mater,  Luther College (Michael Smith).

Smeets Accepts Position at LUCA


Lode Smeets has been assigned as the new tutor of the trombone department at LUCA school of arts (Lemmens instituut) in Leuven, Belgium. He will be succeeding Michel Tilkin, who combined a big career as a trombonist with being a celebrated pedagogue (of many players with great jobs). Lode is Principal Trombone with the South Netherlands Philharmonic and alto trombone player of The Bone Society.

Adjunct Instructor College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University


The Music Department of the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University (CSB/SJU) invites applications for a part time adjunct instructor position with specialization in Low Brass (trombone, bass trombone, euphonium, and tuba) to begin in August 2017. Primary responsibilities will include applied studio instruction in low brass performance. Candidates will work collaboratively with the applied brass faculty and directors of instrumental ensembles, as well as be active in recruiting.  Depending on the candidate’s areas of interest and expertise, other potential assignments may include coaching brass chamber music ensembles and/or jazz combos, and performing in the faculty chamber ensemble, PASTICHE.
The College of Saint Benedict, a college for women, and Saint John’s University, a college for men, are two liberal arts colleges located four miles apart in Central Minnesota just outside metropolitan Saint Cloud and 70 miles from Minneapolis.  The students of these two colleges share in one common education, as well as coeducational social, cultural and spiritual programs.  All academic departments are joint, and classes are offered throughout the day on both campuses. Texas Tech Trombone Ensemble Composition Contest


Duration 6 – 8 minutes in length

Instrumentation:   Bass Trombone Soloist and Trombone Ensemble.  The ensemble may consist of 4 – 8 parts, at the discretion of the composer.

Type of Work:  Stand Alone Concert Piece, to be performed at the Fifteenth Annual Big 12 Trombone Conference, January 12 – 14, 2018 at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX.  Charles Vernon, Bass Trombonist of the Chicago Symphony, is the scheduled feature artist for the conference.

A $1,000.00 Cash Prize will be awarded to the winning composition.

Additional awards may be granted at the discretion of the contest adjudication panel.

Faske Accepts Position at Arkansas State


 

Dr. Bruce Faske recently accepted the position of Artist/Assistant Professor of Trombone at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, beginning in August 2017. In addition to teaching applied trombone lessons, his duties will include performing with the Faculty Brass Quintet and directing the A-State Trombone Choir.

Faske previously served as Artist/Instructor of Trombone at Arkansas State, and Adjunct Instructor of Trombone and Euphonium at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. His teachers include Jonathan Whitaker, Brent Phillips, Jimmy Clark, John McCroskey, Joseph Cox, Don Lucas, and Larry Campbell.

Low Brass Opening at Angelo State University


Job Summary
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Angelo State University seeks to fill the position of Assistant Professor of Music with a specialization in low brass. This full-time, tenure track position requires an engaging individual with a strong commitment to undergraduate music education who will teach applied low brass (trombone, euphonium, and tuba) and courses in the music curriculum that may include Brass Methods and Introduction to Music. This individual must have the ability to recruit, retain, and graduate quality low brass music majors that meet the personnel requirements of the music area which includes, but is not limited to, two concert bands, multiple athletic bands, a full symphony orchestra, and jazz band. Furthermore, this individual will be a strong and positive contributing member of the music faculty that will attract high quality students who present superb musical performances.

Duties
Teach applied lessons in trombone, euphonium, and tuba, a weekly studio class, and chamber ensembles as appropriate. Recruit, retain, and graduate (through academic advising) quality low brass music majors in the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts curriculum. Teach courses in Brass Methods to music education majors, Introduction to Music for non-music majors (in person and/or online), and additional courses based upon experience and the needs of the music area. Participation in university and music area recruiting activities beyond those required for the applied studio is expected. Establish and maintain a successful record of scholarly and creative endeavors, service, and teaching. Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The candidate must demonstrate a high level of performance ability on trombone, euphonium, or tuba. The successful candidate will also demonstrate potential for recruiting, retaining, and graduating a quality studio. The successful candidate must be able to communicate and build a positive rapport with students, faculty, staff, public school teachers, and others in the profession. He or she will possess the ability and initiative to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within the department and university environment.

Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Music from an accredited institution (doctorate required for tenure-track). Multiple years of experience teaching instrumental music at the secondary and/or collegiate level, including experience teaching applied low brass, brass methods, and directing/coaching chamber ensembles. Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, and graduate quality trombone, euphonium, and tuba students. Experience organizing and hosting recruitment events that will encourage students to visit the ASU campus is desirable.
