Get Your Trombone Ready for the New Season
A new playing season is just around the corner, making now the perfect time to give your trombone some attention. To help players get their instruments ready, we’ve collaborated with the trombone makers and specialists from Michael Rath to share some practical maintenance advice.
Start with the slide. Remove any old lubricant and debris using a suitable cleaning rod and a clean cloth. For a more thorough clean, the slide can be washed with warm water and mild laundry soap, using an appropriate flexible brush to remove dirt from inside the slide. Rinse thoroughly and dry carefully before applying fresh slide lubricant. A clean, well-lubricated slide is essential for smooth, reliable playing.
Next, check the tuning slide. Remove it and clean away old grease and any accumulated debris. Once it has been thoroughly cleaned and dried, apply a fresh, even layer of tuning-slide grease before replacing it. Regular maintenance helps keep the tuning slide moving freely and reduces the risk of it becoming stuck.
If your trombone has rotary valves, check that they are operating smoothly and give them the appropriate valve oil. Different rotor designs can require different maintenance procedures, so it’s important to follow the recommendations for your particular instrument.
Finally, look after the outside of your trombone. Wipe it down with a clean microfiber cloth to remove moisture, sweat and fingerprints after playing. Keeping the instrument clean not only helps preserve its finish but also prevents dirt and grit from working their way into moving parts.
