About the ITA Archives
The organizational records and historical archives of the International Trombone Association (ITA) are housed at Columbus State University Archives and Special Collections. As the official repository for ITA materials, the Archives ensure that the history, development, and impact of the association are carefully preserved and made accessible for current and future members.
Founded in 1975, the Archives at Columbus State University support both academic research and the preservation of historically significant materials. The collections encompass more than 5,000 cubic feet across over 500 unique collections, including personal papers, organizational records, photographs, maps, and rare materials dating as far back as 1563. These resources are used by students, faculty, community members, and international scholars, reflecting the global reach and significance of the collections—including those of the ITA.
In recent years, the Archives have undergone major enhancements that directly benefit ITA members and researchers. A significant renovation completed in 2019 introduced a modern reading room, a flexible multipurpose teaching and event space, and—most importantly—a state-of-the-art storage vault. This vault maintains strict environmental controls to ensure long-term preservation, keeping materials at professional archival standards for temperature and humidity. Additional grant-funded improvements, including high-density shelving, have more than doubled storage capacity, allowing continued growth of the ITA collection.
Beyond preservation, the Archives are committed to accessibility and engagement. Expanded outreach efforts—including publications, public programming, and digital initiatives—help bring collections to a wider audience. At the same time, a revitalized internship program supports the next generation of archivists and researchers, ensuring that collections like the ITA’s remain actively cared for and interpreted.
Access for ITA members
ITA members benefit directly from this partnership through access to the association’s archival materials. Whether you are researching the history of the trombone community, preparing scholarly work, or simply exploring the legacy of the ITA, the Archives provide a valuable and growing resource. Materials can be explored through detailed finding aids and, where available, accessed digitally or by request through the Archives.
Members interested in exploring the ITA Archives can begin with the official finding aid, which offers an overview of the collection and guidance on how to access specific materials.
Financial contributions in support of the Archives are also welcome and play an important role in preserving and expanding access to the ITA’s historical collections for future generations. Those interested in supporting or learning more are encouraged to contact David Owings at owings_david@columbusstate.edu.
