One doesn’t expect to see the words “Siegmund” and “Tango” in the same sentence, but this Viennese composer has given us an unassuming, fun little piece easily within the reach of an advanced high school player. A few ad lib parts help adapt it for bass trombone but most of the piece works as printed on either instrument. The tenor part ranges from g to c2 whereas the bass ad lib version ranges from GG to f1. Most of this tango lays within the manageable range of B to f1. Trickier passages lay well on the slide and, in some cases, are marked ad lib, giving the performer some freedom. The piano part does not pose serious challenges, using mostly block chords or octaves in one hand. The publication is clearly marked on good quality paper and includes an optional B-flat euphonium part. An easy piece to put together, Tango can work nicely for solo festivals or to add variety to a younger college student’s recital program. -Brad Edwards University of South Carolina
