In Their Gentle Presence is a lovely moving setting for trombone octet or trombone choir, “inspired by the passing of a loved one”…”dedicated to unconditional love.” It encapsulates both the quiet sadness and intense grief of such an event, but also leaves the listener with hope. The writing is excellent for trombone ensemble and makes it very accessible to a wide range of ensembles from advanced high school to professional. Melody is primarily shared in the top two parts and the composer uses active ostinato patterns that are layered to great effect. There are also moments of stillness that use lush harmonies that play to the strength of homogenous qualities trombone ensemble. This is a great addition to the repertoire. Grade 3.5-4. Range GG-flat to b-flat1.
