Perhaps being the only surviving work from a set of pieces used primarily for teaching purposes, the earliest manuscript of J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue (BWV 895) comes from his son Johann Christoph Bach. Originally set in A minor, Gerry Pagano’s arrangement for trombone quartet is set a tone lower, in G minor. The quasi-fantasia style of the prelude may be difficult to coordinate in a trombone quartet setting, as many ensembles will likely choose a more metronomic interpretation of this section for logistical reasons. However, the transcription was made very carefully to ensure that it is most playable by four trombonists. The parts alternate main motives and take turns resting—especially in the fugue. While not the easiest trombone quartet work to play, most college level trombonists should be able to navigate and manage performing this. The first two parts contain a mix of tenor and bass clef sections and never play higher than b-flat1. Except for a single GG, the bass trombone part stays in a very comfortable range and could be played on a tenor trombone with an F attachment. The parts and score are well-edited. Although there are no rehearsal marks, measure numbers are printed at the beginning of each system for parts and score. There is an abundance of helpful dynamic markings and cues. Gerry Pagano’s transcription of this lesser known J.S. Bach Prelude and Fugue will be a welcome addition to any trombone quartet performance for many years to come.
