Ross Holcombe’s arrangement of Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare is a consummate example of taking a standard piece from the large brass ensemble repertoire and applying it to the trombone octet. Many trombonists have experienced playing Strauss’ fanfare, but all too infrequently due to logistical constrictions. Mr. Holcombe’s arrangement gives trombonists an engaging and musically rewarding opportunity to perform the fanfare. Maintaining the original key of E-flat major, Mr. Holcombe does an expert job in writing idiosyncratically for the trombone while maintaining the grandeur of Strauss’s orchestration. The coordination of some triplet figures between parts, particularly within the lower range would offer good individual and ensemble challenges, especially if the parts are to be doubled, but would ultimately contribute to an impressive performance. This piece is perfect for the large college-level trombone ensemble and would be a wonderful addition to any program to add to the pomp and circumstance of a large trombone ensemble. The written range is up to b-flat1 on the upper parts and pedal BB-flat for the bass trombone parts.  Not included in the arrangement are the two timpani parts, but since the arrangement dutifully follows Strauss, the original parts can easily be applied to this arrangement for even more majesty.
