Written for the 2008 Summer Trombone Workshop of Taipei, Taiwan, this is a new release of this challenging trombone octet. According to the composer, this work refers to the deep sea that surrounds and protects Taiwan. Rocking and motion of the waves are a constant feature, characterized by arpeggios in dotted rhythms in triple meter. In addition, whole tone scale motion in the melody creates an exotic feel. This use of whole tone affects the harmony as well, as harmonic structures are created by stacking melodic material in multiple parts each a whole step apart from each other. The effect is mesmerizing. The ensemble is often grouped in smaller units, typically trombones 1-3, trombones 4-6, and the two bass trombones. This provides important melodic material for all parts and will require excellent performers. Intonation will be an evident challenge due to the arpeggios, close harmonies, and whole tone scales. This is a powerful work for an advanced trombone ensemble. Grade 5, Range GG to d-flat2
