Volume 2 of 12 Stylistic Studies for Tuba or Bass Trombone is Jessica Hawthorne’s newest book, a companion to her first volume of stylistic studies. This etude book provides fantastic exercises for young students with brief studies in a plethora of different styles. Some of the new styles explored in this next volume include polka, jig, funk, and more! These exercises provide foundational skills for elementary players and can be utilized as sightreading tools for intermediate players. From a range standpoint, the etudes go up to f and down to AA. While not overtly challenging, these etudes build up in difficulty which allows students to apply subdivision and counting skills across different simple and compound meters. Through syncopation, cadenzas, and swing, there are a variety of techniques to explore. Hawthorne also has a version of volume 2 for trombone and euphonium which are the same etudes up an octave. These books masterfully fill in the gaps of literature for young bass trombonists and tubists.
