This single movement, dedicated to Dr. Nola Knouse and the Moravian Archives, apparently incorporates several selections drawn from the rich tradition of Moravian music which remains little known to most of us, and it is good to see some of it in print. It is uncomplicated, bright and cheerful music, naturally expressing the joy of a happy family Christmas. It is written for standard brass quintet, 2 trumpets in B-flat, horn in F, trombone and tuba, plus timpani in C, D and G; trombone range is b–g1, with opportunity for some nice legato playing. First trumpet has a high c-sharp3 on the last page. Tempo is mostly moderato; the last 16 measures are marked maestoso and fortissimo! I think the tuba should be playing a low G in the final measure; otherwise production of score and parts is good. Michael Brown is a trumpet player who chairs the Music Department at Mississippi State University in Starkville. -Keith Davies Jones Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
