The tragic tale of Count Egmont, who led an unsuccessful revolution against the Spanish Inquisition in the Netherlands during the 16th century, supplied the inspiration for Beethoven’s magnificent overture. The piece is dark, intense, and highly gratifying for performers and audiences. Although Beethoven did not see fit to include trombones in the original composition, Randall Malmstrom has given us a wonderful transcription that will challenge even the highest level of trombonists. Randall Malmstrom has contributed much to the trombone choir over the years and this piece is a fine continuation of his efforts to expand the repertoire. His transcription features everything found in the original composition, including an optional timpani part. There is nothing in this arrangement that is overly difficult in terms of the individual parts, although strong first and bass players will make performances more successful. The pacing, accuracy, and balance, however, require a high level of attention to detail from every member of the ensemble. The famous opening chords of this piece sound great on trombone as does the exuberant finale. This piece requires expert rhythm to capture the intense drive and constant passing of melodic lines and motivic fragments inherent in Beethoven’s style. Malmstrom’s transcription is best suited for a high level college or professional group. The nuance in this arrangement will challenge any trombone ensemble. But once learned, this music will serve as a highly satisfying and audience-pleasing addition to any concert.
