Primary Genre: Trombone Ensembles - 4 trombones

According to its introduction by long-time BSO bass trombonist Douglas Yeo, this collection of 49 pieces represents the earliest evidence of an "entrepreneurial spirit" among BSO trombonists that has resulted in future achievements in teaching, composing, recording, and other activities. In fact, some of these selections were recorded in 1906, making them possibly the earliest recorded trombone quartets.

Each volume includes a smattering of works by famous composers, Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Schubert, as well as a healthy dose of those whose influence did not extend beyond their lifetimes, Kreipl, Beneken, Korschut, and Kucker. The result is a sturdy if somewhat stagnant set of short works that, while not particularly compelling, could be effective in developing ensemble techniques for aspiring trombone quartets.

These volumes are truly period pieces. As such, they are time and space bound, as evidenced by the overwhelming German influence of the selections. At the same time, the music represents a window into a time when few, if any trombonists were arranging, performing, and even recording trombone ensemble music. Although perhaps less than scintillating, these volumes remain serviceable and instructive as well as historically significant.
