Walter S. Hartley
Sonata Breve:

Havertown, PA, United States
Publisher: Tenuto Publications
Date of Publication: 2010

Primary Genre: Solo Bass/Contrabass Trombone - unaccompanied

This is a newly engraved edition to replace the older manuscript version of this standard work. Written in 1969, it reflects the atonal style typical of that period. It is performed so frequently that only a minimum of description is necessary. The first movement begins with angular and forceful figures, ending with quiet lyricism. The second movement is a blazing fast tour-de-force for the advanced performer demonstrating large leaps and multiple tonguing. It’s a fine example of quality writing and virtuoso techniques, condensed into about four minutes of performance time. Sonata Breve is a proven staple of the bass trombone repertory, and this engraved edition makes it much easier to read and perform.
