Score and parts

Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 3 brass

Brahms' chamber music usually offers a certain set of musical and technical problems so it is not surprising that this arrangement also contains those challenges. The need for adequate rehearsal time to make this music sound will be apparent by just studying the score. However, as my trio sight read its way through the work for the first time we discovered that, with adequate rehearsal time, there is something in this scoring that is worthwhile. Range for horn and trombone are quite modest. The trumpet part lies within a comfortable playing range even though it contains a few c3s. The notes are playable but rehearsal time is required to work out the many occurrences of tempo rubato, ritardandi, etc. While this might be the work to feature on your next recital, it is not a work to sight read on the job! There are rewards for the performers as well as the listeners!
