Tchaikovsky’s famous opera Eugen Onegin is based on a novel in verse by Alexander Pushkin and was premiered in 1879. This brass quintet arrangement features the single-movement Polonaise from the opening of the third act, which begins with a heroic fanfare played by horn and trumpet. The majority of the melodic material is scored in the first trumpet part, which requires advanced technique. Trombone takes the lead role during the more lyrical B section. Trumpet parts are provided in both B-flat and C; range for both remains primarily in the staff. The trombone part is given in tenor clef, with the exception of the last note, which in bass clef. Although not overly difficult, this piece requires multiple-tonguing skills for all ensemble members, and is best suited to a college level group. A nice, romantic selection written by a beloved Russian composer, this work will be a great addition to your library. A sample score and sound file can be found at www.Cherry-Classics.com.
