The symphonic works of Brahms have long been a favorite of trombonists. These Ten Studies were originally composed for horn or trumpet and have been skillfully edited for trombone. Mr. Cherry states that there are questions about whether they were actually written by Brahms. He believes they are and supports his belief with anecdotal evidence.
Originally written in the key of “C” treble clef, here they have been transposed into a variety of mostly flat keys, all in bass clef. Tempi range from Adagio to Vivace. Both simple and compound meters are represented, from 4/4 to 3/8; range encompasses F to c2. Each extends only an octave and a half and do not dwell in the upper register.
Each study focuses on a particular concept, and they flow and lead well. The first explores arpeggios and scales while the second works legato and phrasing. Occasional ornaments are included; in general these are trills and double appoggiaturas. The Ten Studies are a little repetitive at times; generally it is rhythmic repetition that challenges concentration. All but one fit on a single page. Mr. Cherry’s editing is superb; he has added breath marks and alternate slide positions to help in performance. This short collection is the perfect length to supplement other study materials, suitable for intermediate to higher level trombonists and they are easily adaptable to individual students.
