Primary Genre: Study Material - etude

For those unfamiliar with the Blazhevich Sequences, these etudes essentially incorporate two multiple-measure rhythmic/melodic patterns per etude: the first pattern establishes the etude’s key and is then repeated seven times, ascending by scale degree; the second pattern begins again on tonic, is repeated another seven times and descends by scale degree back to tonic. Each major key area is presented, followed by its relative minor key. The etudes incorporate mixed meter and frequent clef changes (bass, tenor, alto). Original articulations, dynamics, and phrases are well-indicated. The editors added “…dynamics which were clearly missing in gray scale…” As an added bonus, Chicago Symphony Orchestra trombonist/Northwestern University professor Michael Mulcahy writes practice hints and performance suggestions.

A tenor-bass trombone is required for performance of many of the 26 etudes, and is helpful for all of them. Range covers AA-c-sharp2. The Sequences require and refine advanced rhythmic and musical skills. Appropriate for advanced students, they demand accuracy, technical proficiency, command of the complete range of the instrument in all dynamic levels, a fine sense of time, aptitude in rhythmic subdivision and competence in all types of articulation, stamina, and patience.
