Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star is no longer child’s play in the hands of Roger Bobo. This transcription for brass quintet takes its inspiration from the famous 12-variation setting for solo piano by Mozart. While these variations prove to be excellent teaching material in the piano studio, in the brass world, players will work hard to effectively negotiate a performance of this well-known favorite. First trumpet alternates between sections for standard b-flat and piccolo trumpets. The speed at which the player is asked to change instruments would lead one to believe that the ensemble will have to pause briefly between some variations to accommodate the instrument switch. Although not indicated in the score, this reviewer feels that based on the rhythmic activity and range, up to e3, the final variation should be played on piccolo trumpet. As one might expect from a tuba virtuoso such as Bobo, the tuba part is exciting and challenging. Tessitura and rhythmic intricacies suggest the part is intended for CC tuba; the writing itself is only second in difficulty to that for the piccolo trumpet. This transcription will be a delightful addition to any recital program. If you are looking for a ‘breather’ this might not be it. But if you seek a tasteful transcription of music from the Classical period, this setting provides just that. Most quintets will tend to program this for a children’s concert (and they should!), but an audience of any age will appreciate the technical command it takes to play this piece successfully on brass instruments. -Mark E.
