Two scores

Primary Genre: Trombone Ensembles - 2 trombones

Equilibrium is a work based on the contrast between dissonances versus unison sounds, using glissandi as a way of reinforcing these contrasts. The use of minor second intervals in contrary motion, imitative entrances, a tremendous amount of glissandi, syncopations, accents, hocket, and sudden dynamic changes provide interest. One must negotiate some mixed meters. Range is G-sharp–b-flat1. North uses both tenor and bass clefs in both parts and marks alternate positions where needed for purposes of glissandi. Cherry Publications includes two performance scores, definitely a necessity where performers must see both parts for accurate performance.

Although Equilibrium is playable by advanced high school players, a certain amount of maturity is required or else the work may sound trite. This is certainly the case with regard to the many glissandi passages that appear throughout the work. Another musical/technical difficulty begins in measure 58, the section employing hocket – it is marked double time, with tempo at quarter note = 200, making the piano staccato articulations a bit more tricky. This is also a spot where both performers must agree on tone quality and timbral nuance. This duet will test and strengthen each performer’s sense of time, ensemble, communication, and listening skills.
