For many years Johann Sebastian Bach composed one sacred cantata per week for church services. Even by today’s standards, Bach’s output of cantatas is a remarkable achievement and a testament to his genius. Boston Symphony bass trombonist Doug Yeo has chosen to arrange a beautiful soprano/alto duet from Cantata No.78 for two trombones and piano. Entitled We hasten with weak, yet eager steps, the work follows the standard da capo aria form (ABA) and is written in B-flat major. The tempo indication of Allegro con moto is accompanied with a suggested metronome marking of quarter-note equals 108. At this tempo a flowing, singing style is achieved, characterized by sweeping phrases in parallel motion. The trombone parts follow the vocal lines from the original and are easily accessible for medium-advanced players. There are no special technical demands in the parts, the first part rising only once to the highest pitch of b-flat1. Otherwise the tessitura rests in the comfortable mid-tenor trombone range. The second part generally remains a third to a sixth lower than the first with range A-e-flat1 and is well suited for either tenor or bass trombone. The rhythmic material is simple and straightforward, lending itself to ornamentation in the da capo section if desired. The trombone parts are printed together, allowing both players to read from the same score, however two copies are included. The score and parts are clear and page turns for the solo parts are well organized. The vocal qualities of the trombone are well suited for this beautiful music and Doug Yeo has prepared an arrangement that is accessible for performers and audiences alike. -Bill Mathis Bowling Green State University
