Score and parts

Primary Genre: Trombone Ensembles - 4 trombones

Zindars was born in 1927 and passed away in 2005. He is perhaps most recognizable from his collaborations with the great jazz artist Bill Evans. He also was a recipient of a Broadcast Music, Inc’s “Jazz Pioneer Award.” Besides his jazz work he has produced some six works for trombone(s) and many classical pieces.

Sanctus is a pretty work full of lush harmonies. The melody is carried by the first and second parts, both in tenor clef. The third and fourth parts are supportive, almost always written in bass clef dotted half notes. Parts range as follows: 1) f-sharp-b1, 2) f-sharp-b1, 3) A-b, 4) D-d. The range and the tempo, marked Slowly quarter at 84, may challenge young players on upper parts to sustain the musical line; however a mature trombonist will handle them nicely. The fourth part requires an f attachment, but with the slow harmonic rhythm of the work the part does not require advanced technical proficiency. Sanctus is nicely presented with phrasing clearly indicated. It is especially suitable for church related performances, but will also make a pleasant addition to a trombone ensemble performance. I believe an audience will find a full trombone choir performance quite beautiful. If you are interested in obtaining the work I suggest going to the Wehr’s Music House website as no postal information is included with the work or on the web site.
