Carl Nielsen’s Five Pieces, Op. 3 was composed for piano in 1890. With movements entitled “Folktune,” “Humoresque,” “Arabesque,” “Mignon,” and “Elf’s Dance,” this work explores a variety of musical settings. For the player who embraces the challenge, the expressive capacity of the trombone has the potential to greatly enhance these lovely melodies. While “Folktune” and “Mignon” are probably accessible to most college level trombonists, the other movements require a nimbleness and sensitivity that may prove to be somewhat more difficult for less experienced players. They encompass a playing range from D-sharp to c2. Furthermore, the individual pieces are each short enough to not be especially taxing, though substantial enough to be performed independently. For anyone looking to expand their expressive palette, the Five Pieces will provide the opportunity to explore musical challenges beyond what is typical of the standard trombone repertoire. The parts and score are well edited for clarity. While most likely to be performed in recital, Ralph Sauer’s transcription of Carl Nielsen’s Five Pieces, Op. 3 could be programmed for almost any purpose.
