Tout Cool is part of Collection Crescendo, a series of graded instrumental works by French trombonists and pedagogues Marcel Galiegue and Jerome Naulais. This grade 2 work emphasizes smooth, cantabile playing within an age-appropriate tessitura, A to e1.

The key of d minor provides winsome harmonic colors and a few accidentals for the student to negotiate. The piano part is well-conceived and relatively simple—even I could play it with a little practice. Tout Cool is a pleasing offering that does not sacrifice musical elegance in its simplicity. Its melodies have a beautiful shape. Its harmonies, simple for the most part, have a few surprising turns; the work ends on a D major seventh chord. It is certainly one of the nicest grade 2 works I have ever examined, and it will please the teacher as well as the student.
