Etude book (16 pages)
Primary Genre: Jazz Material - etude
From jazz aficionado Mark Nightingale comes a collection of 25 short jazz etudes for the young trombonist. Utilizing a computer theme, titles include “Ram and Spam Blues,” “Megabyte Mambo,” and “Of Mice and Keys.” Arranged in progressive order of difficulty, most of the studies are swing style, with differing tempo markings and meters in 3 and 4. The font style for titles is visually appealing in the computer theme. Nightingale indicates appropriate articulation markings for correct stylistic interpretation. Alternate positions and glisses are clearly labeled. At the time of this review, the cost for this book is $12.95 (U.S.). A supporting compact disc with a professional playing these etudes and/or an accompaniment is not included but would be a nice addition. This book is a good jazz education resource for the youngster, either as a series of progressive jazz studies or audition material. -David Stern University of Maine
