It is unusual for a brass quartet to have access to an original composition using twelve tone technique or dodecaphony. This work fills that need. In addition to the tonal basis for these four movements, Halverson has given the player something to think about rhythmically. The first movement has five beats to the measure; the second has three beats and the third and fourth have mixed meters. The professional quartet that read this twice did not read it through readily. It is not a work that can be played through once and performed. There is plenty to ponder, especially for the brass musician who is usually playing more common harmonies and rhythms. It will take some work, but there should be learning, and satisfaction is getting this short composition ready for performance. The composer provided me with a schematic of the work that is useful. I hope he will include it with each copy of the score. -Mark Lammers Gustavus Adolphus College
