In the ever-expanding world of trombone repertoire we find remarkably few compositions intended for six trombones compared to works for four. This particular sonata is a pleasure to play and displays a wide assortment of rhythmic and melodic variety throughout all three movements. Sonata for Six Trombones follows a typical fast-slow-fast format, utilizing 20th century compositional techniques. The opening movement is a thrilling musical expedition, the second movement a sweet and moving song, and the final movement is a brisk affair anchored by pointed rhythms in the bottom two voices concurrent with melodic fragments in the upper four voices. Bristol excels in engaging all six voices in unpredictable music that incorporates difficult meter shifts requiring a large degree of concentration from all players. It does not rely on mutes or advanced techniques for effect. -Tom Pylinski Malone University, Canton, OH
