Primary Genre: Study Material - book

For those of us that have an interest in tuba, this is an essential volume of comprehensive information. The contributing authors and editors are an extensive array of international influential tuba performers and pedagogues. Solo literature lists divided by accompaniment: keyboard, band, orchestra, mixed ensemble, unaccompanied, and electronic media comprise the first six chapters. Entries are sorted by composer and contain additional information such as arranger, publisher, date of publication, price, performance time, difficulty level, range, and relevant performance information such as performance practice issues and technical requirements. Included at the end of chapter one, subtitled “Music for Tuba and Keyboard,” is a cross-referenced index of works arranged alphabetically by title. Chapter seven lists music for multiple tubas and also includes an index by title. The remaining chapters consist of methods and studies, orchestral excerpts, and a discography. Editorial remarks are given for the methods and studies and orchestral excerpts, and include similar information as referenced in chapter one discussed above. Sorted by performer, each entry in the discography chapter lists album title, personnel, record label, and repertoire recorded. Indices cross-reference recordings by works’ titles and composers, and addresses of recording companies and distributors conclude the chapter. Two appendices conclude the volume, the first containing addresses of publishers and composers and the second containing biographical sketches of the contributing editors. This welcome addition to the brass anthology is a “one-stop” information bonanza for anyone with an interest in tuba teaching and/or performance.
