Toccata is the first part of the Toccata and Fugue BWV 538. This organ work is known as the Dorian because, although there is no key signature, it is cast in d minor. The constantly running sixteenth notes are written in concertato style. That is, the melody is shared by the eight trombones over a basso continuo that traverses all parts. Ralph Sauer, formerly of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, provides a literal transcription of the piece, with some thoughtfully added dynamics and an ambitious tempo marking. The first two parts are written in tenor clef and the bottom two parts are designated for bass trombone. Range extends from AA in the eighth part to d2 in the first part. Not nearly as well known as some of Bach's other Toccatas and Fugues, BWV 538 nevertheless translates well to this medium as it pays discrete homage to a musical legend. -Joel Elias Sacramento State University
