Mr. Thomas has made two fine arrangements of these famous melodies for two B-flat trumpets, F horn (with trombone sub for horn) and trombone. Air on the G String has the first trumpet playing the melody throughout. Everyone knows the tune and to play it with rhythmic accuracy at piano and mezzo piano volumes with sensitivity requires a good player. Second trumpet and horn require the same sensitivity as they play accompanying counterpoint. Trombone plays the familiar octave patterns throughout. There are alternate notes an octave higher if the trombonist does not have an F-attachment. For quality players there should be no range problems. It will take some work to get this piece ready and it is well worth the effort.

In Ode to Joy first trumpet again carries the familiar melody throughout, made mainly of quarter and eighth notes. The bottom three parts have more interesting parts to play as they supply rhythmic pulse and harmonic support of the tune. Again, there are alternate notes an octave higher if no valve is available. The lowest note is C for the trombone. There should be not range problems in the three top parts. Presentation is excellent.
