For those of us who teach or have an interest in euphonium, this work is essential. It is a comprehensive text, 589 pages, divided into chapters written by separate author(s) dealing with repertoire, recordings, performers, performance practice, history, auditioning, doubling, jazz, equipment, and related literature. The repertoire chapters, possibly the most important for teachers who are unfamiliar with euphonium literature, are organized by accompanying instrument(s), such as keyboard, wind band, orchestra, unaccompanied, and electronic media, to name a few. Each referenced solo entry lists as much information as possible regarding the publication, to include composer/arranger, publisher, cost at time of printing, duration, difficulty, range, and a brief review. Works are cross-referenced by both title and composer, facilitating easy location of relevant information. Chapters on music for multiple euphoniums and recommended repertoire originally written for other instruments, i.e. trombone, cello, bassoon, are also included. Brian Bowman contributed the chapters regarding standard audition literature for military bands and recommended methods and studies. John Mueller authored the chapter on the subject of trombone-euphonium doubling and Neal Corwell contributed a chapter regarding effective recording techniques for the euphonium. Appendices addressing contact information for composers, publishers, and manufacturers, as well as lists of conferences, contests, and festivals, are featured. This welcome addition to the brass anthology is a “one-stop” information bonanza for anyone with an interest in euphonium teaching and/or performance. -David Stern Lewiston, ME
