Robert Delfausse is professor of trumpet and theory at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY. He performs regularly with the Riverside Brass Quintet and also has background as a jazz pianist. Most of his recent compositions have been for wind and brass chamber music. His Brass Quintet No.2 reflects his interest in jazz and has a decidedly Latin feel, especially in the first and third movements. My mostly Mexican quintet thoroughly enjoyed reading this work, and described the first movement as a Cha Cha Cha. The lyrical second movement makes good use of the lyrical qualities of the trombone. With its popular elements and solid construction, this work can serve as an enjoyable recital piece. As is the case with much brass quintet repertoire, the most demanding playing is in the first trumpet part, which reaches up to concert b2. Trumpet parts are written in B-flat and the trombone part is given entirely in bass clef. The lowest part, though playable on double valve bass trombone, is specified for tuba and appears to be written with that instrument in mind. The parts are printed on good quality paper, are well spaced and arranged so as to avoid page turns, and generally quite easy to read. Though probably written with a professional level ensemble in mind, this work is playable by a university level quintet.
