This contrasting, two movement work is ideal for an advanced beginner or intermediate player. Many musical fundamentals are covered such as tempo, articulation, dynamic inflections and the melodic content is sophisticated yet simple to execute. In addition, the piano part is easy enough to be performed by a non-piano specialist, making this an ideal studio selection. The opening Moderato builds to a climax by outlining chords in a minor tonality with accents and crescendi. The piano accompaniment strikes a healthy balance between doubling of the melody and complete independence. Rallentando and diminuendo at the conclusion of the movement give way to a longer, more spirited but slow ala breve march. Phrases unfold organically and lend themselves to logical breathing and slide position decisions. The soloist must count a few rests, and tempi are determined by the pianist, a healthy compositional choice. Range is A to e1, and some chromatic facility on the trombone is required. Saqueboute is another outstanding selection from the “Collection Trombone” under the direction of trombone legend Michel Becquet. -Joel Elias Sacramento State University
