Rob Hudson, accomplished trombonist, author and composer, offers the following introduction: “The studies in this book are designed to provide trombonists with a wide variety of technical and musical challenges, progressively arranged from beginner to advanced levels. Each study forms a complete musical statement, encompassing classical music, jazz, funk, rock, and other traditional and popular world musical styles. Alternative slide positions are indicated where their use facilitates easier and more natural slide movement.” Instructions are given in German and French, as well as English, and while some Italian terms are used for tempos, all jazz-related tempos and styles are given only in English. Etude titles are engaging and include such memorable names as “Duke & Billy,” “Dance of the Brigands,” and “Spyware.” A variety of meters, dynamics, contrasting styles, and key signatures (including sharps!), are spread throughout the etudes. Articulation markings reflect appropriate stylistic practices. The more difficult etudes use complex rhythmic structures, tenor clef, multiple tempo and stylistic sections, and cadenzas. The most difficult etude can be played by fine high school level players. Print and quality of paper are excellent. The feel of the book is reminiscent of 40 Progressive Studies for Trombone by H.W. Tyrell in terms of a steady progression of technical challenges and musical integrity; however, the contemporary and jazz-influenced nature of the etudes provides an appealing contrast. The colorful cover and cleverly titled etudes of this new modern studies book should be well-received by younger players. -David Stern Lewiston, ME
