Karl Hinterbichler offers these etudes to practice the more challenging excerpts in the orchestral bass trombone repertoire, to provide different ways of approaching this music, and to add variety to one’s practice routine. “It is hoped that by practicing and mastering these etudes, the excerpts themselves will become less daunting and easier to perform.” The etudes are based upon Creation – Haydn, William Tell Overture – Rossini, Ein Heldenleben – Strauss, Hungarian March – Berlioz, Ride of the Valkyries – Wagner, Das Rheingold – Wagner, Overture to La Gazza Ladra – Rossini, Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin – Wagner, Symphony in D – Franck, Hary Janos – Kodály, and Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme – Strauss. They make use of transposition, articulation-focused rhythms, pulsing and subdivision, and repetition of fundamental concepts in a variety of rhythmic settings. Intonation, breath control, steady pulse, dynamic control, range expansion, and slide technique issues are the focus of many of these exercises. Regular practice of these engaging etudes provides an opportunity to move away from the monotony of repetition and focus on skill development necessary for the successful performance of these challenging excerpts and other literature. For the orchestral-minded bass trombonist, this etude book is a useful addition to the study of the standard audition excerpts. -David Stern Lewiston, ME
