Kevin Kaisershot (b.1957) lives in Illinois where he works as a freelance composer, arranger and trumpet soloist and teaches in the public school system. The famous Reformation hymn of Martin Luther ‘Ein Feste Burg is unser Gott’ is probably most widely known in Bach’s arrangement (Cantata 80). In this new work the familiar chorale undergoes contemporary stylistic treatment in the form of a jump-style variation, Allegro energico; a jazz ballad, Andante espressivo; and a 6/8 march, Allegro spirito. Scoring is for two trumpets in b-flat, horn in F, two trombones, baritone and tuba. It’s written in the key of b-flat throughout, and except for one 5/8 bar, in either 4/4 or 6/8. Trombone writing is straightforward, first part range is B-flat – d1, and second covers G – c-flat1. Altogether a spirited and well-crafted composition that is worthwhile material for a high-school band and fun to play. Production is good; parts are clearly printed. -Keith Davies Jones University of Manitoba
