Justin Chiang, a euphonium and trombone player from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, has miraculously arranged 20 Bach chorales for traditional brass trio, B-flat trumpet, horn and trombone. I agree with the catalogue description from Cherry Classics: “They sound great and can be used for a variety of purposes including warming up the group at the beginning of a rehearsal, a recital, funeral, religious service, etc.” This a welcome addition to brass trio repertoire.

These chorales are quite challenging as miniature works of harmonic art. About half are in minor key centers, although most wander through the most amazing harmonic regions. The majority of the key centers are in “sharp” keys creating another challenge to the trio’s intonation. The only suggestion I would make regards BWV 145 on page 7. The original chorale is transposed from E minor to F-sharp minor. I believe the key signature should be changed to three, not four sharps. It is impressive that Justin Chiang was able to keep the resonance of the original SATB writing utilizing only three voices; well done. I look forward to enjoying these gems.
